The Renaissance was a time of philosophy, science, the arts, and even the art of war. During the Renaissance, mercenary armies emerged, fighting for the greatest price throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The captains of these armies had the power to build or destroy entire nations. These armies were divided between rival kingdoms, traders, and religious groups.Playing Renaissance Kingdom Wars places you in the familiar position of a captain like this. You'll fight in real time to seize cities and claim the throne for your monarch. You will then make them prosperous and rise to become your own master. You might be tired of bending over yourself to get scraps from the royal table by the time you've mastered this magnificent technique.
So what? Elevate the bar for revolt and seize power.
And if that's insufficient? A new emperor who would surpass Rome's achievements is poised to unify the remainder of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
As the captain of your mercenary company, you begin the epic campaign. Your contract with your liege will take you to many conflicts under their flag, be it the sweltering Holy Land, the icy Scandinavia, or wherever in between. You will be required to lead your troops to success in everything from fierce sieges and ruthless naval engagements to epic battles involving thousands of men, horses, and machines—and to keep them in fighting condition after the carnage is finished.
You could be awarded with your own city and made a lord, with the expectation that you will lead your troops to victory – and keep them in fighting shape once the slaughter is done.
As a reward, you might get your own city, rise to the position of lord, and be asked to maintain the peace, conduct diplomacy, and establish your own territory. If your goals are higher? There's nothing stopping you from tearing up the contract and launching an arquebus, pikes, and full-scale assault on your former company. Not enough yet? You can ascend to the position of emperor general over the entire known world, which stretches from Jerusalem to the Pillars of Hercules, and you will have to deal with the powerful politics that have brought an end to one such empire. Will things work out better for you?

Feel like giving up on guts? Instead of chopping it out with pike and shot, begin your conquest as a minor lord from the outset. Alternatively, choose one of the thirty-six historical countries and start playing amazing games and politics right away! Just keep in mind, though, that you are the king that the other mercenaries serve, and they may decide that their heads would make better crowns!
