Mayes, MSc, attended the University of British Columbia where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts (double major in linguistics and speech sciences) in 1986 and Master of Science in audiology in 1988. She later completed a certificate in Adult Education from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
Jan has longstanding tinnitus and hyperacusis. Her career as a certified licensed audiologist spanned clinical audiology, medico-legal evaluations, hearing conservation programs, and health and safety education with specialization in tinnitus, decreased sound tolerance (hyperacusis), and noise-induced hearing health damage.
