An Eden of the Good | 304 | Grant Madison Hervey | | John Heritage, London |
Described by Geoffrey Serle in the Australian Dictionary of Biography as a "versifier and a swindler" Hervey was at various times charged with attempted murder and forgery and received a number of gaol sentences. He wrote this historical novel while in prison at Bathurst Gaol where he served as the librarian. The Oxford Companion to Australian Literature describes the work as "a bizarre historical novel set in Tasmania and Sydney in the 1930s [and] peopled by historical characters such as Charles Darwin, John Dunmore Lang and William Charles Wentworth as well as by the exotically named governor Sir Dratsum Sneek (the well-known 'Keens Mustard' spelt backwards)."
